- Santa Teresa Beach – Tourists travelling with young kids usually prefer to stay on Santa Teresa beach which is little more upscale than Malpais. Restaurants and basic facilities are easily available in this town. Energetic surfers also prefer the waves on this beach for their water sports.
- Playa Carmen – Essentially a beach for surfing, Playa Carmen lies between Malpais and Santa Teresa. The rip tides and beach breaks here are less vigorous than in other regions of Costa Rica and so even learners can enjoy some surfing here. But the waves do get intense as you move toward Santa Teresa in north. Book a vacation villa for a week and you can enjoy a blissful break here.
- Manzanillo – If you prefer a beach vacation rental in a secluded and calm area near Malpais, this could be the best spot. Retaining its conspicuous backwater vibe, Manzanillo does not exhibit signs of development that are prominent in Malpaís and Santa Teresa. It is simply a small hamlet with few small bars and restaurants.

While planning your beach vacation rentals in Costa Rica, consider some of these beaches too:
